Prof:N A KAREEM PASSED AWAY==CPI-ML RED FLAG, KERALA

 Academic and former pro-vice-chancellor of Kerala University N A Kareem died at his residence at Peroorkada here on Thursday afternoon.He was 90. Kareem, who had taught at various colleges and universities including Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, leaves behind wife Meena, daughter Dr Farida and son-in-law Dr Mohamed Shafi. The burial will take place at Palayam Juma Masjid cemetery here at 12 noon on Friday . An author of hundreds of articles on educational, social, political and cultural issues both in English and Malayalam, Kareem had made valuable contributions in strengthening the educational standards in the state. Besides serving as the Kerala University pro-vice-chancellor for two terms, he was also at the helm of the All-India Save Education Forum, the Anti-Imperialism Forum, the Social Advanced Foundation, the Vakkom Moulavi Foundation and the Thonnakkal Asan Smarakam.

Born in Kochi in 1926, Kareem was expelled from Ernakulum Maharajas College for his involvement in freedom struggle. After a short stint in politics and journalism, he pursued his BA in Malabar Christian College.He got his masters from Aligarh Muslim Universi Muslim University and later took PhD in English literature from Kerala University .
